Festival days are long. You are up early, at the temple by seven, cooking by nine, receiving relatives all afternoon and posing for photos in the evening — in weather that is either humid or bright. The outfit that works is the one that still looks fresh at 6 pm. This guide is about that, not about what looks good for one photo.
Onam (August–September, Kerala)
Onam falls at the tail of the monsoon: damp mornings, warm afternoons, a big sadya at midday. The traditional look is cream and gold, and you do not need a kasavu saree to honour it.
- A cream, off-white or ivory kurti set with a gold, mustard or green detail reads as Onam from across the room and is far easier to eat a sadya in than a saree.
- White or pale dresses with a fine print work for Thiruvonam evenings and for children’s events at school or office.
- Pick pure cotton or cotton blends over synthetic “silk” — the humidity makes anything that doesn’t breathe cling by noon.
- Gold jhumkas, a jasmine string and a simple bangle finish it; keep the make-up light because of the damp.
Navaratri and Golu (September–October)
Nine days, nine visits to friends’ golu displays, often in the evening after work. You want something that goes from office to golu without a change.
- Many families follow the nine colours for the nine days — a good excuse for a kurti set in a colour you don’t usually wear. Check the year’s colour list on any Tamil calendar app; the order changes each year.
- Kurti sets with a dupatta are the most practical golu outfit: covered enough for a puja, comfortable to sit on the floor, and the dupatta can be draped for the photo.
- Avoid very long hems if you will be walking between houses in the evening — mid-calf is easier on steps and autorickshaws.
Diwali / Deepavali (October–November)
In Tamil Nadu the day starts before dawn with the oil bath and new clothes — so the new outfit is worn from 5 am, through sweets, visits and fireworks. Comfort is not optional.
- Jewel tones — maroon, bottle green, royal blue, mustard — photograph well in the low light of lamps and don’t show the odd turmeric or oil mark from the kitchen.
- A kurti set in a heavier cotton or a cotton-silk blend gives the festive weight without the heat of real silk.
- If you are lighting crackers, choose cotton over anything synthetic — synthetic fabric melts on contact with a spark, cotton just scorches.
- For the evening, a midi dress with a structured neckline and statement earrings is a modern option that older relatives still read as dressed up.
Pongal / Makar Sankranti (mid-January)
The one festival with a cool morning. Pongal is cooked outdoors, there is smoke, and there is a lot of standing around the pot — this is the day for a print that hides things and a fabric that washes easily.
- Bright printed cotton — yellow, orange, turmeric, green — matches the mood and the turmeric-tied pots, and a smoky morning does nothing to it that one wash won’t fix.
- A tiered or A-line dress is easy to squat and bend in while tending the pot; a straight kurti with pants works just as well.
- Three-quarter sleeves are practical near the fire. Keep the dupatta pinned or leave it for the afternoon visits.
Weddings, receptions and engagements in between
For a guest — not the bride — a well-cut kurti set with a dupatta or a floor-length dress in a rich colour is appropriate at most South Indian weddings, especially the reception. Save the heavy silk for the muhurtham if you have one; for the rest, cotton-silk blends look the part and let you last through a long lunch.
Two habits that make any festival outfit better
- Wash and iron it before the day. New cotton has a factory finish that shows creases; one cold wash and a damp iron makes it fall better. Our cotton care guide has the details.
- Check the size two days before, not on the morning. Try it on with the inner wear and footwear you plan to use. If something is off, message us — an exchange is much easier before the festival than after.

How early should I order for a festival?
Seven days ahead for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, ten days for Bangalore, Hyderabad and the rest of India. That leaves time for an exchange if the size needs changing.
Can I wear a kurti set instead of a saree for Onam?
Yes. A cream or off-white kurti set with a gold or green detail is a widely accepted Onam look and much easier to eat and move in.
Which colours are best for Diwali photos?
Maroon, bottle green, royal blue and mustard photograph well in lamp light and hide the small marks a festival day leaves. Very pale colours can look washed out in the evening.
Do you do matching sets for mother and daughter?
